Chen Xiaoqing, a documentary filmmaker, works on food documentaries and writing, searching for new flavors is his job. This program is the first time he goes in front of the camera to explore the stories behind the food with his own perspective. Chen travels to eight different regions in China, where he works with different guides to complete his own flavor journey. He believes that “food is not only delicious, but also a kind of adhesive that allows for more understanding and communication.”

China Beyond Tastes

Food is living history. It reflects great shifts in the past and preserves the fine details of ancient life. The documentary Ancient Recipes lightly unlocks the flavors of the past, using food to reveal the history and stories behind it. Taiwanese writer and cultural scholar Gao Wenqi hosts the kitchen, joined by guests from food and culture. In a relaxed, humorous setting, they recreate centuries-old dishes and the traditional wisdom hidden within them.

The 10-episode series focuses on Zi River in central Hunan, known for Anhua Dark Tea and the Tea Horse Road. Local cuisines highlight seasonal flavors. Starting from Shaoyang, the source of Zi River, our journey spans 650+ km through Lengshui River, Xinhua, Anhua, Taojiang, and Yiyang, ending at Dongting Lake and Yueyang. Our camera captures stunning mountains and villages. Local dialect "Have you eaten? Come and eat." invites global guests to enjoy Hunan's hospitality and diverse cuisine.

Dunhuang is the intersection of the four civilizations on the Silk Road. This historical background makes Dunhuang scenery full of mixed blood temperament.
